Things you should have-
Suncream, Suncream, Suncream.
A hat and sunglasses are very useful items.
Water, water, water: Big refillable water bottles. (FYI: Tab water is safe to drink) Or get a case of bottled water and put some in the freezer. Take them to wherever you go. Save you the headache from dehydration later.- Get a bag of ice at the banyan mart next door.
Water shoes: MUST MUST get. The Big Island is different than other islands. So many Rocks on the beach, under the water. Great to see fish. Not too good to walk on. Easy to slip and easy to step on a sea urchin
Bug repellents: If you are going hiking, especially the North or Hilo side, you will regret it if you don’t have it. Normally I am all for those organic/non-chemical alternatives. I tried the Anti-bug Repellent Bracelet, organic spray.. Unfortunately, come to bugs, only the repellent with DEET in their ingredient does the tricks.
The first stop after check-in at the condo for us usually is Walmart. Walmart is about 3-4 miles away from our condo. (Address: 75-1015 Henry St, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740) We usually load up the essentials including the must-have items above. For bottled waters, I found it’s cheaper to get the Hawaii Mountain Freshwater or other local brands. Plus, why buy water shipped all the way from the mainland when you can get locally bottled water.
Things you should not do on the island-
Don’t turn your back to the ocean
Don’t take lava rocks-It’s Illegal (and bad luck according to legend)
Do not leave any valuables inside your car, even in the trunk. The island is peaceful and has a low crime rate. The only thing I heard people ever complained about is the items left in the car got stolen.
Do not swim alone when there is no lifeguard.
